Setting up your Vimeo account

Before we can even begin, it’s important that you have access to your own Vimeo account from https://vimeo.com

The free account is great, but it won’t do everything you’ll need. We recommend that you pick their Starter plan (from https://vimeo.com/upgrade-plan ) as a minimum because you’ll need access to their custom video player.

So, you’ve created your brilliant new video, and want to get it all loaded up onto its relevant course. The first thing to do is to upload it to your Vimeo account:

It'll take a little while to do its thing, and then when it's done, give your video a proper title and we also recommend using a sensible folder structure (you’ll be thankful for this when you have a lot of videos to sort through!).

The first thing to do is to sort out your thumbnail image.

Pick a thumbnail image (displayed when the video is first shown but not yet played) –selecting it from the video itself is a good option:

Play the video and pause it on the frame you want and then press Select this frame:

Next, you should sort out the privacy options which need to look like this:

You can restrict where your video can be seen by picking the Specific domains option from the embed menu:

The simplest way to restrict this video to work only within your Upskill People learning platform is to type in a domain name, like uspshow.usptools.com.

You get the domain name from your browser, top left:

… and don’t forget to save your changes.

Now set up how the video behaves when it loads, and you do this in the Player settings so that it looks like this:

And switch off everything else! (the last thing you need is for learners to go off to other areas of the internet liking and sharing, and generally not focussing on completing their course!).

Oh, and if you need to replace the video (rather than upload a completely new one and start the whole process again!) then that’s easy too. Just pick Replace video from the “3 dots” (top right):

Browse to your new video and press Open:

Make sure you really want to replace this video!

… and it’ll tell you it’s doing it:

You’ll end up with a clean, safe video ready to embed into your course just like this one:
